10 Best Spas
Spas have become popular spots for "wellness" vacations. A recent Zagat
Survey listed the following spas as the best in the United States.
- GOLDEN DOOR
Escondido, CA: Here's where Hollywood goes-only 39 guests per week. Usually
women only, but there are some coed and men only weeks. Always at the top of the
spa list.
- CANYON RANCH
Tucson, AZ: Great adult summer camp. Desert oasis where guests jokingly talk
about paying $1,000 per pound to lose weight, yet enjoying great food.
- CANYON RANCH
Lenox, MA: The zenith of spas and perhaps a little snazzier than its sister in
Arizona. If you enjoy the ambiance of a New England-style inn and
state-of-the-art facilities, this is a great choice
- GIVENCHY
Palm Springs, CA: The ultimate in luxury with award-winning cuisine. This
newcomer is turning heads in the desert with its French Renaissance architecture
and breathtaking mountain views.
- SPA INTERNATIONAL
Fisher Island, FL: Posh, relaxing atmosphere on a tropical island close to
Miami. An elite getaway, the spa is housed in a 1929 Vanderbilt estate, but
everything is 1990s plus.
- SPA AT DORAL
Miami, FL: Terrific facilities and said to be the last word in luxury. Great for
athletes with five golf courses and 15 tennis courts, along with multiple spa
offerings.
- RANCHO LA PUERTA
Baja, Mexico (30 minutes from San Diego, CA): Almost a spiritual retreat that's
set in a natural outdoor environment. Guests enjoy the casual but professional
atmosphere of the Golden Door's sister spa.
- SONOMA MISSION INN
Sonoma, CA: Coined the pink pleasure palace but known for its rigorous workouts.
Forget the diets, this is known for its superb cuisine and, of course, hearty
Sonoma wines.
- LA COSTA SPA
Carlsbad, CA: Great golf and tennis, plus located 10 minutes from beautiful San
Diego. Set on 450 manicured acres, the scene is a well-appointed facility and
great location.
- LAKE AUSTIN SPA RESORT
Austin, TX: Low-key but focused atmosphere and serves delicious, healthy
Southwestern cuisine. A lakefront setting adds a perfect, homey touch.
